As the days grow shorter and a chill starts to fill the air, the allure of warm, sun-kissed destinations beckons. This article is your passport to discovering some of the lesser visited, but still enticing winter getaways where you can bask in the sun, lounge on sandy beaches and explore exotic cultures.
If you like Barbados… try Antigua
If lounging on a beautiful beach is a top priority for you this winter, Antigua is a wonderful idea – it hosts 365 beaches, one for every day of the year! History buffs should make sure to visit Nelson’s Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Shirley’s Heights, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the harbour below (insider tip: if you’re there on a Sunday, don’t miss the infamous Shirley Heights BBQ). There are plenty of activities to discover as well in Antigua; it has perfect weather conditions for sailing (it even holds its own world-recognised regatta in April/May each year) and other water activities such as snorkelling, diving and windsurfing are popular too. Families are well catered for too– swimming with stingrays or zip-lining through the Antiguan rainforest make incredible memories for any child (or adult too!).
If you like Dubai… try Oman
The jewel of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman offers visitors a bit of everything. The coastline stretches for miles offering pristine beaches and the opportunity to relax, snorkel, take part in a variety of watersports or even join a dolphin cruise. Discover the rich cultural history by exploring well-preserved forts and castles, visiting the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque or wandering around one of the many vibrant souks (markets). For full immersion into Omani culture, head out into the rugged Hajar Mountains for a wander between abandoned hilltop villages, swim in refreshing wadis, or spend the night sleeping under the stars out in Wahiba Sands; the vast desert of Oman. Oman offers a unique blend of adventure, culture and relaxation which makes it a perfect destination for anyone seeking an authentic Arabian experience this winter.
If you like Tenerife… try Gran Canaria
The hottest of the Canary Islands during winter, Gran Canaria offers mild temperatures that are still pleasant enough to enjoy a spot of sunbathing. Swimming in the ocean might be a bit chilly for some this time of the year, but it’s the ideal season for hiking to the base of Roque Nublo, visiting some of the colourful villages, or taking in a sunset across the Dunes of Maspalomas. I’d recommend hiring a car to explore the island in full; make sure to drive up to Pico de las Nieves which is the highest point on the island – as well as panoramic views of Gran Canaria and neighbouring islands, it’s also a great spot for stargazing.
If you like India… try Sri Lanka
An escape to Sri Lanka, the ‘teardrop of the Indian Ocean’, gives visitors a bit of everything – varied wildlife, diverse landscapes, and a rich history of ancient civilisations, colonial rule and independence. The national parks of Yala, Udawalawe and Wilpattu offer safari game drives to see leopards, elephants, sloth bears and much more, and one of many highlights not to be missed is the scenic local train which travels through the tea plantation highlands between Nuwara Eliya and Ella. After an exciting adventure exploring ancient cities and wild jungles, relax on one of the many charming beaches along the south-west coast; make sure to visit picturesque Galle to see the Portuguese-built Fort and Lighthouse.
If you like Mauritius… try the Maldives
For unparalleled luxury, white sand beaches and crystal clear blue waters, you can’t beat a Maldivian holiday. The country is made up of over a thousand coral islands, although not even 200 of them are inhabited. Arrive in style, as to get to your resort you’ll need to take either a speedboat or seaplane, and spend your days there relaxing on secluded beaches, watching vibrant sunsets and enjoying world-class dining. A paradise for underwater enthusiasts, the Maldives is world renowned as a diving and snorkelling destination and offers chances to see whale sharks, sea turtles, manta rays and many more marine creatures. As well as the famous overwater bungalows, many of the resorts offer unique experiences including underwater restaurants and spas, glass bottom canoes and sleeping outdoors on a private sandbank.

Finland
One of the best locations in the world to witness the mesmerising Northern Lights as well as being the official home of Santa Claus, a visit to Finland is a bucket-list holiday for most. Embrace the snowy landscapes and try snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or take an exhilarating snowmobile ride through the winter forests. Meet the local Sami to learn about their culture, snuggle up in the back of a sled pulled by reindeer, or head out mushing with a team of energetic husky dogs. Don’t miss the opportunity to stay somewhere unique such as an ice hotel or a glass igloo.
