We are in the midst of a transition: summer to autumn. Despite a clear drop in temperature, particularly noticeable first thing in the morning, there are times throughout the day where it is unfathomably warm. It makes dressing for work in the dark and cold impossible to judge.

As the darkness is creeping in closer and the weather reports promise blizzards in the near future, we also need to make sure we’re prepared for the blustering winter.

In our latest fashion segment, we pick some of our high-street favourites to help you update your wardrobe with a few key pieces that’ll help, whatever the weather.

Turtleneck sweaters

We love the chunky, roll neck sweaters in stone colours for autumn/winter. When it’s a little chilly but not too cold, the turtleneck will help to keep your neck warm. Wear it with a t-shirt for warmer days so if it is a little warmer than expected, you can whip it off and wear it alone. On the colder days, you can wear it with a long-sleeved top instead and throw a scarf on for even more warmth. It’ll look great with a pair of skinny or straight black jeans for something more casual but still classic and still suitable for the office. Equally, it’ll look great tucked into a high waisted skirt for a little definition.

Rugby jumpers

Athleisure has gone all varsity. You may notice a lot more rugby shirts are in stores on the high-street and we have to say, we’re digging the look.

Turn up the colour, where with chunky bracelets, tucked into high waisted skirts and we’re sure you’ll agree with us.

It’s also perfect for transitioning from season to season. As most are made from cotton, the fabric will be breathable allowing you to be comfortable on those unexpected warmer days. Again, you can layer a rugby shirt quite effectively. Underneath you can wear long sleeve tops to and t-shirts to stay comfortable when the heating is on but its quite chilly outside.

Wrap coats

They’ll keep you warm on those strolls to work and ensure you’re feeling confident for whatever the day has in store. They effortlessly make any outfit look polished. Try it, pair with trainers, cropped jeans and a sweater and we’ll bet you’ll still feel fierce. It’s perfect for those many functions you’ve got coming up and is sure to go great with anything.

Leather

A leather, even faux leather, skirt will serve you well over the next few months. Not only is it functional, and practical for work, but it’s perfect for party nights, nights out with friends, even Christmas day. If you can stretch the purse strings, we’d recommend going for real leather as it’ll last a lifetime and leather never really goes out of style. Plus, you’ll not know warmth like it.

Wide Leg Trousers

We’re so grateful to see that wide-leg trousers are popular again. They’re comfortable, sturdy, and look great paired with shirts, jumpers, t-shirts, flats and heels, they really go with everything. We’d recommend going for a pair with a high percentage of wool as this will not only be warming, it’ll help them to keep their shape better – cotton based wide leg trousers will crease more and will not be flattering.
