One goal we should all be more committed to in 2022 is honing our personal style. The new year is a great opportunity to stop, take stock, re-evaluate and make adjustments- why shouldn’t our personal style be a part of that? After all, our interests, tastes, and body changes over time and clothing we have loved previously may no longer suit. So, this year, or more specifically, this January, take the time to reflect on and adjust your personal style. Here, we look at ways in which you can do that.

Have a really good sort out

If you don’t often have a good wardrobe clear out, the new year is the perfect time to do it. Really take the time to look through all of your clothing, shoes and accessories and consider the following:

  • When did I last wear it?
  • Do I still love the colour, the style?
  • When can I wear it next?

If it’s something you’ve owned a long time and never worn or worn much, why? If it’s something you’re not likely to wear or you feel it no longer suits you, it’s time to let it go.

Whilst you’re having a good clear out, give thought to how you’d like your wardrobe to be organised. This will help ensure you get the best wear out of everything you do decide to keep. It can be helpful to compile a list of go-to outfits that encompasses clothes, shoes, jewellery and accessories- this will save you considerable time throughout the year too.

What is your personal style?

Personal style

It can be difficult to pinpoint your personal style. Maybe you see something and get it because you like it, which is perfectly fine, but you may not get the best wear out of it as you may not have considered when you’d wear it or what you’d pair it with. Perhaps you find that although you love something, you’re too self-conscious to wear it (though thankfully, as you get older, you’ll naturally feel more confident to wear something that you not only love but suits you too). As such, it can be really helpful to research and hone what your tastes are and what styles suit you to get as much wear out of your purchases as possible.

When conducting your research, consider the following:

  • What colours suit your skin and hair tones?
  • Are there any eras/style of clothing that stands out to you?
  • What is your body shape and what clothing styles compliment it?
  • Consider your likes and dislikes – compile a list of things you know you’d never buy and consider the things you’re always drawn to and why.

Something we’d strongly encourage when it comes to finding your personal style is a willingness to be open and experimental. We can end up being pigeonholed in our style because we know it worked for us before. However, our bodies change as much as our taste as we age, and as such, a style that worked for us before, may no longer work now (for me, it’s high- waisted jeans. They’re an absolute no-go but use to suit me so much).

Create a capsule wardrobe

You’re going to need some basics. We all have staple clothing, like jeans, t-shirts, joggers, white shirts, and dresses. They’re always good to have. By creating a capsule wardrobe, you’ll always have these basics on hand, which can not only make dressing day to day effortless, but these ‘basics’ are great as a base to showcase your personal style. For example, you may opt for a bold print on top or bottom and team it with something muted to help it, and your personal taste, stand out. Perhaps your personal style is in bold accessories- like a coat, boots, or a statement necklace.

In addition to the core pieces in your wardrobe, look to clothing and accessories that can be adapted or customised to suit your mood for the day- jewellery where you can change out the charms, or capes or wraps which can be worn in multiple ways to create entirely unique looks are just some of the simple ways to show off a signature style and all offer simple, yet quite dramatic changes to an outfit.

We love the Small Chunky Hoop Earrings from Olivia & Pearl which are not only a bold but contemporary style that can be worn effortlessly with everything but can be worn with charms to create a unique and personalised story. All of these pieces are currently on offer in the January sale too!
