We’re very much aware that sleep is meant to be good for us. But why is that exactly? Well, through a bit of net research, I can break this down into 2 main reasons:
- It’s a regenerative process: Our bodies take an awful lot on daily so it uses the time of slumber to process the day (storing to memory what it will), restore (which in other words is get over aches, pains, tiredness, colds etc.) and strengthen (Healthy Sleep, Harvard)
- Allows us to maintain normal levels of cognitive skills. We’ve all felt the effect a lack of sleep can have on our mobility, speech and thought processes (BBC Science and Nature).
Though you didn’t need me to tell you this as I’m sure you’ve felt the effects of lack of sleep at least once before, we feel that sleep is an important subject to your overall health and wellbeing. Lack of sleep, and the effect it has on us as individuals, has a catastrophic effect on how we live our lives. If we’re not getting sufficient sleep, sleeping at all or fail to understand how to get a good night’s sleep, this can play havoc on our emotions, well being and impact on our careers, relationships and children. It’s imperative to a balanced lifestyle.
So over the coming weeks we’re going to dedicate several articles to this very important topic; looking at ways in which to improve your sleep quality, understanding the process of sleep, how to better relax and prepare for sleep, habits that need to be broken, making your environment conducive to sleep and ways in which to reduce stressors that may impact on your ability to get a good night’s sleep.
