The King of Rock and Roll is long gone, but this is the closest you will get to seeing him on stage.

Canadian Steve Michaels is an Elvis tribute artist and actor and this musical is his latest act. Together with a band, he takes us back to one of the key moments in Elvis Presley’s life, when he turned away from the movie industry and focused on going back on stage.

While the first act sets the scene and includes dialogue and theatrical scenes, describing Elvis’ state of mind (and career!) after 15 years in the film industry, the second half simply a tribute to the King himself. Steve Michaels has been performing Elvis for so long, it seems second nature to him.

First we are at the NBC studios, when Elvis performs again for the first time, then head to Graceland (where else?) and then to the rehearsal room at the International hotel suite in Las Vegas, preparing for the first show of Elvis’ season booking in Vegas. At time, who know this one season would end up being seven years of performing in Vegas? There are some great songs including Love Me Tender and Bridge Over Troubled Water, but the real hits are all in the second act, when Elvis does his first full-length show at the International Hotel and brings out all the audience’s favourites.

I won’t tell you which is song he chose as his final hit, but there is a good mix of greatest hits and slightly less ‘greatest hits’, though even in a show lasting over two hours, it is difficult to choose which songs make the cut.

During his ‘concert’ though, the real fans starting showing their faces, standing up and dancing at every opportunity, and shouting and whistling with every word he said, as if he was the man himself. (Hats off to the couple in the Grand Circle who did an amazing dance routine!)

If you are an Elvis fan, this is the closest you will get to dancing along in front of the stage to the King of Rock and Roll – make the most of it!

The show runs at the Bristol Hippodrome until Staurday July 28.
