The long awaited, award winning musical has finally made its way to Bristol.

It is still a relatively new production, having only launched in Chicago in 2012. Yet Kinky Boots is already digging its heels firmly into the ground as a heavily decorated and one of the most celebrated musicals of our time. And it really isn’t hard to see why.

The Kinky Boots musical is a book/stage adaptation of the popular British film of the same name. Based on true events, Kinky Boots is about Charlie (played by Joel Harper-Jackson) who unexpectedly takes over his fathers’ factory in Northamptonshire; making shoes that nobody wants. Foreclosure seems inevitable. But a chance encounter with drag queen Lola (played by the incredible Kayi Ushe) gives Charlie some much needed inspiration on how to save the business and find his true calling, love and passion.

This show has one of the greatest ensembles I’ve ever seen. With each song and meticulously choreographed scene, impeccable. It made for easy watching and an all-round enjoyable performance. A poignant story, incredible songs like “Step One”, “Not My Father’s Son”, “Soul of a Man” and “Raise You Up/Just Be” and glamourous costumes; it is a winning combination.

Of course, leads Joel Harper-Jackson (Charlie) and Kayi Ushe (Lola) is what delivered last nights’ standing ovation. Both delivered meaningful, heartfelt and all-round fantastic performances of two characters who’ve had more than their fair share of challenges.

With an original and beautiful musical composition (by none other than Cyndi Lauper), it is a tongue-in-cheek, feel good and quite frankly seeeeeeeee-xy musical where ladies, gentlemen (and those yet to make up their minds), are sure to have a great time.

Kinky Boots is at the Bristol Hippodrome until the 9th of March.
