Ingredients
For dough
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 teaspoons yeast
- 1 large egg
For filling
- 1 teaspoon ground Ceylon cinnamon
- ¼ cup butter
- ⅔ cup brown sugar
- Salt (to taste)
- 2 teaspoon olive oil
For cream cheese frosting
- 4 ounces cream cheese
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Salt (a pinch)
Directions
For dough
1. Take a large bowl and add all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and yeast to it. Whisk it well.
2. In a microwave-safe bowl, pour the butter and milk. Microwave it until the butter has melted. Pour this mixture into a bowl of dry ingredients.
3. Now add the egg to it and whisk it until a soft dough forms. Transfer it to the work area.
4. Flour the work area and knead the dough with your hands for a few minutes until you have a smooth dough in the form of a ball. Gradually sprinkle flour to avoid sticking. Set it aside to rise.
For filling
5. Transfer the dough again to a well-floured work area and spread it into a 14×9-inch rectangle.
6. Now spread the butter all over the dough, leaving about a 1/2-inch border all around the outside of the dough.
7. Take a small bowl and add brown sugar, Ceylon cinnamon, and salt to it. Mix it well.
8. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the buttered dough. Roll up the dough to make a long roll, and then cut it into small rolls (about 10 to 12).
9. Take a baking pan and grease it with olive oil or non-stick cooking spray. Arrange the rolls in a pan.
10. Cover loosely with a clean cloth or aluminium foil and allow to rise for another hour until doubled in size and puffed up.
11. Now bake them in an oven at 350°F for half an hour, or until they are golden brown and no longer doughy. Allow them to cool on a wire rack and make cream frosting.
For cream cheese frosting
12. Take a medium-sized bowl and add cream cheese to it. Whisk the cheese well until it becomes smooth and creamy.
13. After that, add butter and mix it until fully combined. Add in sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix it and spread it over the rolls, and serve immediately.
Nutritional package
Ceylon cinnamon rolls offer you good nutrition. It is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It has anti-inflammatory activity and may help reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It may also be beneficial for protection against heart disease and cancer.
Variations
While making the frosting, you can add chopped nuts or raisins to add an extra nutty taste. Instead of cream cheese frosting, you can use coffee icing. If you want it to be dairy-free, use almond milk or coconut milk, you can also use vegan butter and vegan cream cheese to make the recipe completely dairy-free.
Tip to make the rolls more fluffy
If the rolls are not fluffy enough, it is because they did not get enough time to rise. Generally, this recipe needs two rises: one after making the dough and the other after making the rolls. These two rises eventually help in making your rolls fluffy.
