Review: Madagascar The Musical at The Bristol Hippodrome

The much loved Dreamworks movie has FINALLY been adapted to stage.

Following much the same storyline, characters and jokes as the movie, our friends Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria come to life in this staged version. Bringing with it some catchy songs and feel good vibes.

Madagascar musical

Just in case you’ve not seen the movie, the show follows Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo; from Central Park Zoo to the tropical island of Madagascar. Where life is certainly different when you’re use to living behind bars.

Alex, usually portrayed by X-Factor star Matt Terry was absent from this performance, as I can make no comparison, it’s easy to say that Brandon Gale, who took his place, was absolutely mesmerising and who I’d go again to see his portrayal of the role. My favourite scene has to be the psychedelic scene that follows getting shot in the butt with a dart.

Madagascar musical

The mischievous penguins were also reason alone to see this show; they’re just as cute but calculated as the characters we’ve come to know and love who bring the whole thing together.

However, it was Jo Parsons as King Julien that was, in no doubt the crowd favourite. Portraying the over-excited Lemur that is king of the land, from the moment he waltzed on stage he had everyone in the audience laughing and arguably, just as excitable. Never before have I seen an audience so enthralled with a character.

For a show that is just as colourful as your imagination with clever puppetry and plenty of pageantry it’s surely, in our opinion, the feel-good musical of the year.

So, if you like to move it (move it!- yes, you will be dancing), get yourself tickets to see this spectacular show at The Bristol Hippodrome, you’re guaranteed a roar-ly wild time.

Madagascar the Musical is at The Bristol Hippodrome until the 13th of October.
