Harriet, whose debut album Harriet comes out on 7th October, talks to us about her inspiration, the process of writing new songs, her excitement for her upcoming tour and her favourite things about Autumn, what she likes to do in her downtime and her dessert island must have…

Harriet First and LastWhat do you like to do in your down time?

I love to spend time with friends; a great movie; some great music! And going to the gym helps me feel my best and keep my head clear.

What really happens on tour?

I will find out when I do my first UK tour in February 2017! It’s being booked right now.

Best aspect of making an album?

Writing a song and then hearing the development from the raw demo to a fully arranged track. It’s magical hearing that transformation.

What’s been your best gig and why?

I love performing so much, it’s the best experience, sharing my music with people who have especially come to see me. They seem to get better and better each time, so I suppose the best is yet to come…!

The biggest compliment you’ve received and from whom?

A fan once told me they had to pull over on the motorway when they heard my voice on the radio, because they were “overwhelmed and couldn’t stop crying”. I’ll never forget that one.

What is your process for writing new songs?

I come up with ideas all the time and am constantly recording things into my dictaphone / wiring things down. When I have something solid, I then like to take it into a session with another writer to develop it. I get very impatient when writing alone. I prefer to work with other people; I enjoy that collaborative process.

What do you see as your biggest challenge in the music industry?

Remaining true to myself as an artist, whilst still being aware of what’s around me in the industry.

Do you recall the moment you wanted to be a singer and songwriter?

When I was about 13. I have never really wanted to do anything else.

Who/what inspires your music?

People. Both friends and strangers.Harriet still

If you weren’t a singer-songwriter, what would you be doing?

I’d definitely be working in music. Perhaps management. I love the development process in this industry. It can be hard work and frustrating, but extremely rewarding when you see something you’ve worked on progressing successfully.

If you could collaborate with anyone- who would it be and why?

I would love to sing with George Michael and Michael Bublé as I adore their voices. And would love to work with Barry Manilow – his songs are amazing and I think he is one of the best musical arrangers on the planet. I would love to write with Diane Warren – she has written so many of my favourite songs. She is so inspiring. And I am a big Beatles fan, so Paul McCartney is someone I would love to work with.

What’s your favourite thing about Autumn?

The combination of bright sunshine with the cold weather – Can’t beat it!Autumn is definitely my most favourite season. The colours of the leaves are stunning too – reminds me of long walks in the countryside where I grew up.

What movie are you looking forward to seeing at the cinema next?

Whatever the next Bond movie is. I LOVE those films. Everything about them. Although, I sure will miss Daniel Craig if he is replaced (ha)! In fact, ‘Love Will Burn’, a song on my album is inspired by these movies. It has always been an ambition of mine to write and perform a James Bond theme.

What’s your go-to style?

Monochrome or rich jewel-like colours, good tailoring, and always something sparkling.

What’s your favourite quote (mantra)?

I have so many. But this one is a favourite: “Life goes on within you and without you” George Harrison.

What are you currently reading? Are you enjoying it?

I am terrible at reading and get very distracted. But generally I like anything about philosophy and psychology.

Favourite dish to cook?Harriet Still

I love cooking indian food – with lots of flavour.

Your dessert island beauty must and why

Any Jo Malone Cologne. I feel incomplete without it!

Favourite destination and why

There are so many places I would love to visit. But currently, I would say my favourite place I’ve travelled to is Istanbul. It is a beautiful city, with wonderful people, delicious food and a wealth of culture and history. I’ve been several times.
