Shopping for makeup brushes can be one of the hardest purchases. If you’re no makeup artist it can be hard to know what you need and what they’re for. Then of course do you go for synthetic fibers or natural ones? We can help! In this guide, we look at the basics for buying makeup brushes to help you make an informed decision.

The different kinds of makeup brushes and how to use them

Starting off with the base, foundation

Everybody has a preference for a specific foundation brush. There are many different options to choose from, depending on the desired finish and the foundation formula.

A rounded foundation brush or buffer is perfect for blending in liquid or cream formulas to leave a flawless, streak-free finish. Whereas a stippling brush does not pick up as much of the product and distributes it evenly for a natural finish.

The same applies for the formula of blushes and bronzers

Powder blushes or bronzers are best worked in with natural hair. For cream-based products however, it is best to choose a synthetic brush.

Types of brushes for the eyes

Whether you love a smoky eye or a natural look, there are some absolute essential eye brushes you should have in your kit. For example, a fluffy blending brush is a must to get rid of harsh lines, and a flat eyeshadow brush is perfect for pressing the pigment softly onto your eyelid. For a more dramatic look, an angled eyeliner brush is the ideal tool to perfectly enhance the lash line.

What do you need?

For a basic everyday makeup look I cut it down to my all time favorites: a good foundation brush – e.g. a stippling or a buffer – depending on how thick your foundation coverage should be; a soft, fluffy eyeshadow brush for blending out harsh edges; a tapered blush brush to achieve a natural glow and finally a big powder brush to ensure a matte finish.

Synthetic vs. natural fibers

Natural bristles have great blending properties and are ideal for all powder products. Synthetic hair is ideal for cream and liquid based products as it ensures smooth and streak-free application.
