Smokey eye steps

  1. Apply a cream concealer like Lancôme Effacernes over your eyelid to create a smooth base for your eyeshadow
  2. Use a pencil liner like Rimmel’s Scandal Eyes to trace your top lashline
  3. Using the same pencil, dot between your lower lashes getting eyeliner as close to the roots of the lashes as possible. To do so, gently pull up your lids up and look down slightly so that it’s easier to see the gaps between the lashes. Then smudge both lash lines with a cotton bud or brush
  4. Sweep powder shadow – brown, grey or dark green – over your lid and into your eyelid crease
  5. Blend the colour up and out
  6. Dust a lighter, neutral eyeshadow over your brow bone
  7. Dab a darker colour shadow – either black shadow or a darker version of your main colour – in the corner of the outer lid and blend into the crease
  8. Add a slick of liquid eyeliner if you are going for a dramatic look
  9. Finish with two coats of black mascara such as some Lancome Hypnose Drama Mascara, or some false eyelashes

Smokey eye tips

  • Make sure all your brushes are clean before you start as this look requires several colours and they need to be applied carefully with gentle blending
  • For long lasting colour and to give your lids a shimmery finish, smooth a cream shadow over the concealer on your lid first, wait a few minutes, then layer over a matching powder shadow
  • For a subtler, everyday look follow the steps above using light brown tones to enhance your eyes
  • Dip a cotton bud in Vaseline to mop up any mistakes
  • Apply translucent powder just outside the edges of your eyes so that eyeshadow doesn’t creep across your cheeks

Winged eyeliner precision

  1. Start with the flick. Close your eye and using your lower lash line draw up the eye
  2. At the end of the flick  draw a line back towards the upper lash line – like a little triangle
  3. Fill in your triangle with your eyeliner pen or brush
  4. Use a cotton bud dipped in makeup remover to remove any mistakes

Shades of smokey eyes – what colour eyeshadows suit what colour eyes?

  • Blue eyes: try a champagne or silver toned smoky eye look. Avoid any pigments that are too bright. Create your smokey corner blending with black
  • Brown eyes: gold and bronze work well with brown eyes, but you can get away with just about anything. Classic black works for creating the smoke
  • Green eyes:  try purple and pinks. Stay away from green shades, as they will hide your eyes – use either black or brown for your smoke blending

Now you should be all ready to bat your eyelashes at the Christmas party – go forth and enjoy the compliments!
