With juicing and exercising being two of the most popular ways to kick off a fresh start to the New Year, many people don’t realise the damaging effects the seemingly ‘healthy’ month could have on your teeth.
Juices have become a staple part of modern diet, which can cause the production of harmful acids, and acid attacks lead to enamel decay, which cause 80% of common tooth problems.
Enamel is also more at risk of erosion directly following exercise because when we exercise the body needs to divert the moisture to other areas of the body, such as the muscles- meaning your mouth becomes drier. When you reduce the amount of saliva in the mouth your body lowers the ability to buffer the acid and neutralise it, therefore leaving yourself more susceptible to acid erosion.
Erosion is an invisible process but leads to long-term enamel mineral loss which is irreversible and once the enamel layer has been eroded, the body is unable to regenerate it naturally.
Using a daily toothpaste with enamel protection is likely to stop acid erosion and even reverse any early signs. If juicing/change in diet is a top priority on the resolutions, research the nutritional values of the products you’re introducing and where possible substitute or reduce the high acidity/high sugar fruit and vegetables for an even healthier boost.
