Self-Care this Christmas

Christmas to-do list looking a little chaotic? On the build-up to the big day there seems to be a million and one things to do; decorations to get up, gifts to buy, wrap and even finding the time to deliver, writing out and posting the Christmas cards and of course, preparing for the day itself. Then there are the parties, the markets you want to go to and all the other wonderful Christmas activities too.

Even seeing it written out like that can be a bit stressful and overwhelming.

That is why, it is important to have a little self-care this Christmas; so that it can be enjoyable for you too, not just making it enjoyable for those around you.

Be Prepared

To get you to the main event you’ll need a thousand to do-lists. Your lists will give you something to work from and save you from relying on your memory when it’s already somewhat challenged with the day to day.

Recommended lists:

  • You’ll want a specific gift list- include everyone you want to give ‘something’ to. Tick it off as you go along accounting for what you’ve bought and spent to help you evaluate as you go. It’ll also be a life-saver when it comes to the wrapping too as you’ll have a note of who gets what
  • Parties- if you’re hosting a party, outline the activities you want to do, a menu and guest list
  • Christmas day list- outline a rough time schedule. Essential if you’re cooking the feast of the day. Don’t make it too regimented and ensure you encompass some time to relax and enjoy some time with the family
  • To do list- include the cleaning of whatever you want cleaned, the things you need to do to prepare for your guests, getting the Christmas cards written and delivered etc.

In addition to your to-do lists. Make sure you allocate the time in your diary to help you get things accomplished. Over allow time for things; a whole day for Christmas decorations (and nothing else), a whole evening for just writing your Christmas cards, a whole day for wrapping etc.. Also outline what markets you want to get to, the shows you want to see, the lights you want to visit etc. in your diary. Once it’s in there, you’re more likely to do it.

Delegate

Don’t carry the burden of Christmas on your shoulders. I am sure that your partner will be more than willing to help, often they just need to be told. It may be helping with the wrapping, sharing the load when it comes to cleaning or even them taking responsibility for buying for their family members.

Additionally, make sure you have some helpers on hand to help with cooking the dinner on Christmas Day. There are lots of things even little hands can do to help lighten the load.

Against your list, note who is tackling what and ensure everyone is clear on their Christmas role. It’s amazing how these roles become tradition Christmas after Christmas.

‘Me’ Time

Hairdresser

Ensure you allocate some time just for you this Christmas. Whether it’s getting out with the girlfriends for a coffee or cocktails or simply allowing yourself a little time for a pamper. Book yourself into the hairdressers (add it to the to-do list) and why not book a manicure whilst you’re at it. You’ll feel good and more festive taking the time to relax and enjoy the build up too.

Stay Healthy

Not only is it the season of goodwill to all but it’s the season of flu; the gift no-one wants this Christmas.

Make sure you allow yourself time to get your 8 hours or at least the time to catch up later after a party (don’t book an event the evening following a party for example). Take the time to sit and relax with a movie or two (plan this into the diary too) or even read a new book.

Ensure you dose up on Vitamin C and D to help reduce any impact of the cold virus and drink plenty of water. We also recommend keeping your skin hydrated by switching up your creams for the winter seasons; the chilly air outdoors mixed with central heating can lead to chapped, sore skin and increase your chance of a cold sore showing up (if you’re prone to them).

Also try to make homemade healthy and hearty foods like soups and stews and even make extra so you can freeze and have something on hand for those busier nights.

If It Doesn’t Get Done, It Doesn’t Get Done

We’re all living up to an expectation of ‘perfection’; the standard doesn’t exist. Do what you can to achieve what you want to achieve (there is no have to achieve!- absolutely key to remember); noting every event in the diary and working your way through your to-do list will help you to get to where you need or want to be. But sometimes life isn’t as orderly as that, things come up. Don’t beat yourself up about what doesn’t get done. Come Christmas Day it won’t matter. Take pride in what you have done and just try and enjoy the day as much as you can.
