New Year’s resolutions, staying on track with your goals.

In celebrating a New Year, we compile a number of goals and achievements we want to work towards. But on waking upon the very first day of the year, complete with hangover, some of those goals seem way beyond reach. Whatever your dreams/goals are for the year, whether it’s to give something up, try something new, work towards a goal, a trip or whatever, we want to help you achieve them. Here’s our top tips for staying on track in 2018:

Frame them: 

This is an idea we’ve picked up from Lauren Conrad– write down or type up your resolutions on a piece of paper and frame them. Keeping them by your bedside as Lauren does, means there is always an opportunity to look at them and reflect daily on what you’re doing to work towards them.

If you’re the type of person that works better with visuals, create a moodboard instead and print that, placing it somewhere you’ll see it everyday.

Form a habit and make time from the outset:

They say it takes 21 days for a new habit to form so be persistent. You can absolutely do it.

We realise though that most things can’t be catalogued in this way unless it’s something you do everyday, so if your goal is to exercise 3 times a week, be consistent with your schedule- determine which days of the week and the times you’re going to workout and get a routine going and form a habit this way. Once you’ve allocated the days/times you’ve set aside to achieving your resolutions, don’t let anything else intrude on your time to achieving them.

Don’t let it be a chore: 

Most of the standard resolutions such as exercising more and eating healthier can leave us feeling sad and full of dread. Don’t be too restrictive, talk to a nutritionist or dietician if the goal is to eat better and find ways to incorporate the foods you love- remember it’s all to do with moderation! When it comes to exercising, experiment, find a sport or activity you really enjoy and you’ll be meeting your goals in a fun and healthy way.

TIP: As a part of your reward scheme you could purchase yourself a new gym kit to help you feel motivated. Apply a treat concept to the ones you feel less confident with.

Make the goals with someone else: 

By sharing a mutual goal, you’ll have the support of each other in trying to achieve them. Whether it’s a fitness plan you can work on with a girlfriend (great excuse for a regular meet and a gossip too) or a dream vacation with your beau, sharing that aim with someone will give you excitement, dedication (as you’ll be dependant on each other to achieve it) and ultimately help you achieve it.

Make them achievable: 

There is bound to be some major achievements you want to accomplish in life but it doesn’t have to be all in one year. Set yourself a few big goals such as work on a promotion and go to the Caribbean (if that’s what you want to do of course) and compliment your resolutions with smaller projects too such as drinking more water. For the major objectives, you’ll likely need to break these down into manageable chunks such as budgeting for that holiday or set up a meeting with a line manager/career specialist to help you achieve these but it’s not impossible. When making your resolutions, consider what it is you need to do in order to achieve them.

Be realistic: 

There may be some goals that may be harder to accomplish than others. It doesn’t mean it’s impossible but don’t feel disheartened if things don’t move as quickly as you’d intended or go the way you thought or imagined. If you slip up, write the day off and start again tomorrow. It isn’t a case of be all and end all.

Reward yourself: 

Like I said in the Christmas post, it’s time you started giving yourself a pat on the back for the achievements you make, no matter how small it may seem. A reward programme may be just what you need to drive you to achieving more.

Keep track: 

Note down in your diary, in a journal or chart, ways in which you’re working towards your goals. Seeing the little achievements will make you feel more confident in your own abilities and feel good for working towards what you want to accomplish most in 2018.

Most importantly, don’t overcommit. If juggling isn’t your forte then you don’t want to give yourself too much to work on. Limit yourself to 3-5 goals balancing the little and the large to allow you to fully embrace the things you want to achieve most.
