You may think a fashion don’ts article is going to be full of things you should never do – or wear! But actually, fashion is incredibly personal and so when it comes to your personal tastes and style, anything goes.
This article is dedicated to all of the things you skim past every day; the things you say ‘I’ll wear it someday’ but never do, the things you’re never likely to ever wear (or again). It’s time to have a good clear out and say goodbye once and for all. Let’s understand why you don’t want to wear them so you can make lessons for the future.
Take out ever piece of clothing: shirt, skirt, trouser, dress, and t-shirt that you have ignored this past year and ask yourself the following:
- Why haven’t I worn it? – has no occasion called for it, for example?
- How do I feel about it? – is it something you would like to wear, or it is something you would’ve worn (feels more reflective of you at a different time)?
- Do I have something I would wear it with- does it need an opposite mate, what accessories could you envision going with it?
Put the item on and consider:
- Does it suit me? Really pay attention to the fit of the item?
- How does the collar sit?
- Do I like the sleeve length?
- Where does it sit on my waist?
- Do I like the length of it generally?
- How is the cut on me?
- Does it cover what I want it to cover and reveal what I want it to reveal?
- Do I like the colour– does it complement my skin tone, hair and eye colour?
If it’s something you really want to keep, and therefore wear, create an outfit around the item and make a plan to wear it as soon as possible. Sometimes we pick up an item because it speaks to us for whatever reason but then we don’t actually wear it. With items like this, it is just a case of putting yourself outside of your comfort zone and giving it a try. If you don’t feel comfortable when wearing it, maybe its time to let it go.
For those things that don’t suit you, for whatever reason, for those things you won’t have the occasion for, or have simply gone off, it’s time to discard once and for all. So, upcycle, recycle or rehome. It can be hard to part with items you once loved, or thought were meant for you, but the key takeaway here is to understand your likes and dislikes better. It makes shopping for things you want or may need in the future so much easier – and much more pleasurable!
