Millions of women, 80% of the female population, are wearing the wrong sized bra. But if we’re comfortable in what were in, why does it matter?
Well, not only will a properly fitted bra give you the lift and comfort you deserve but it has the ability to change your entire silhouette and your confidence.
Where are we going wrong with our bra fittings?
Namely, we make an assumption that one size fits all. We’re assuming we’re the same size in every store we walk in and that our size doesn’t vary regardless of style, performance and even what our bodies are going through. Fact is, all of these scenarios impact on the size and shape we need.
But even if we look at the sole example of our menstrual cycles, the size and shape of our breasts vary greatly, week by week.
How do you know if you’re wearing the wrong size bra?
How it fits on your back
1. If your bra moves throughout the day, you probably need a different size.
Do a test: pull the band at the back of the bra whilst secured. If it gives more than an inch (2 fingers), it’s too big and you need to go down a size. If it’s less than this, you may need to go up a size.
2. The strap should be at the centre of your back, just below your shoulders.
If it rides higher, you’re not getting the support you need and you’ll need to check out the size of your back strap and cup.
3. Although straps are adjustable, if they’re digging in or falling off, it could be an indication that the size isn’t right.
The best way to test this is to put on your bra and drop the straps- the bra should pretty much remain in the same place. If it doesn’t, it isn’t working for you.
Cup size
1. The wire underneath should sit into the breast crease and be flush against your rib cage.
If you can feel/see your breast under your arm or the wire digs into your armpit, you’ll need a different cup size.
2. Your breasts should be fully enclosed within each cup without any spillage or raising of the wire.
There should be a smooth line. If you’re not getting this, you’re probably wearing the wrong size.
Our top tips for getting the right size
1. Just because it doesn’t fit now, doesn’t mean it won’t.
Don’t go throwing out all your bras just yet. Try it out at different times through the month, if you find it still isn’t giving you the security you need, then it’s time to go.
2. When buying new bras, get yourself measured in store.
It’s well worth using the free store service each time your looking to buy. Although you’ve probably done your research at home. Each store will have a different manufacturing process and the assistants there will have a better understanding of their range and how it’ll work for you.
3. The style of bra is likely to change with your size.
As highlighted, you won’t necessarily be a one size fits all so if you’re looking for a new t-shirt, push-up, strapless, sports, lacy etc. it’s well worth getting yourself measured.
4. Shop for the occasion
If you’ve bought a new outfit for a special occasion, don’t assume you’ve got your bra sorted at home. Whilst out, try on a few different styles and see what works best for the outfit and your confidence.
5. If you’d rather make your purchases at home…
Check it out at home, there’s plenty of information online to support your purchase so if you really don’t want to use the stores facilities, check the return policy and do your own fit at home. We particularly like this comprehensive guide from herrom.com
