Afternoon tea is a traditional British celebration; it’s the perfect get-together for members of all generations, for a catch-up with friends, or to enjoy a special birthday together.

There are so many options for afternoon tea in the UK. Today, we’re looking at some of the best and most unique afternoon teas you can try, from formal tearooms to magical Harry Potter-esque experiences.

Top 5 afternoon tea experiences

The following are some of the tastiest and most exciting afternoon tea experiences in the UK. They vary in price, but they’re all pretty popular, so it’s worth booking a time slot well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Storrs Hall, Lake District

For pure luxury, you can’t beat this. Storrs Hall is a stunning Lake District hotel (it made the cut for Tatler’s 101 Best Hotels in the World). With incredible views of Lake Windermere, this is an unforgettable experience for all ages.

Served every day between 1.30 and 4 pm, you can sit in one of the hotel’s conservatories or lounges while enjoying a series of homemade pastries, cakes, and (of course) scones, all with traditional Cornish clotted cream. They also offer savoury bites and a range of teas.

This is a particularly lovely choice for little ones: their Tiny Tots Tea dishes up sandwiches, fruit, cake, and a scone, all on Beatrix Potter crockery. They’ll also receive a complimentary colouring book. This is a great location to visit if you’re planning a multi-generation family occasion.

Sherlock’s Mind Palace, London

This has to be high on the list of the best afternoon tea in London! Sherlock’s Mind Palace is not just an afternoon tea; it’s also a mystery, and you’ll have to solve a series of puzzles and riddles while tucking into your scones.

You’ll be given freshly made cakes, homemade sweets, tea, and scones with clotted cream and jam. They’ll provide a range of savouries too, including pastrami sandwiches, pretzels, and savoury muffins.

The experience lasts at least 90 minutes and is perfect for a family day out with older kids (the age limit is 10+). It would also be brilliant as a quirky alternative hen do for fans of Sherlock Holmes.

Zindiya, Birmingham

Zindiya is a gorgeous ‘Streatery’, serving up gorgeous Indian street food and cocktails. The food, like the decor, is vibrant and colourful, and the dishes are pretty reasonably priced.

They offer an afternoon tea experience, which gives a gorgeous Indian twist to the traditional afternoon tea experience. The High Chai tea provides savoury dishes, homemade cardamom scones, and macarons. They also give you the Mumbai sandwich, which is an incredibly tasty sandwich packed with veggies, fresh herbs, and spices.

It’s a lovely experience and would make a great surprise gift for a loved one.

Wizard’s Afternoon Tea, London

If you’re looking for a magical experience, this is the place to go. Wizard Afternoon Tea is located at the Wands and Wizard Exploratorium in Soho. Based loosely on franchises like Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, the Lord of the Rings, and other fantasy series, this will make a gorgeous alternative birthday party!

Before you sit down for your tea, you can choose a magic wand, cast ‘spells’ to open up your tea stand, and find ingredients in a locked puzzle chest. You can brew your own tea, which is lovely; you can make a custom tea that suits your tastes.

Afterwards, you’ll get a traditional scone, as well as sandwiches and a range of puddings, including lemon tart and raspberry macarons. If you’re going with a group of adults, you can upgrade your tea to prosecco or seasonal beer.

Ashwell & Co, Bristol

Located in a vintage bridal store, Ashwell & Co offers traditional afternoon tea on delicate cutlery in a gorgeous setting. It’s the kind of place you want to dress up for and would make a beautiful treat for Mother’s Day or a special birthday.

Ashwell & Co’s vintage tearoom is one of the best high teas in Bristol, offering sandwiches using locally baked bread, Victoria sponges, tiffins, Bakewell tarts, Earl Grey-infused scones, and loose-leaf teas. The menu is vegetarian, and they offer vegan afternoon tea, too.

While the location in Clifton is truly gorgeous, they also offer home delivery for their afternoon tea experience and will set up a larger event for you, bringing their own vintage tableware for the occasion.
