If you love working out, have a true passion for the science of fitness, and love working with people, then working as a personal trainer can be a great option. You get to set your own hours and choose the clients you decide to work with. You also get the chance to make a real difference in someone’s life. Getting started is also not very difficult either. Let’s take a look at what personal trainers do, how to become one, and what type of skills are needed to be successful.

What do personal trainers do exactly?

The job of personal trainers is not only to come up with a fitness routine for their clients, even though that’s a large portion of the job; they also need to look at their clients’ health and fitness history and see what they might be doing wrong. They will also give their clients nutrition and lifestyle advice.

Trainers also have to coach the people they work with and be ready to step into other areas of their lives to do so. There’s a psychological aspect to personal training that has to be taken into consideration, and there are times when you’ll have to motivate clients. You will also be there to monitor any progress or lack thereof and make sure that you hold your clients accountable.

How can you become one?

If you want to become a personal trainer, you will need to get the qualifications. You will need at least a level 2 diploma to work as one. The good news is that personal trainer courses are rather affordable and can be completed very quickly. If you want to know more about personal training courses, we suggest you explore your course options here. You can choose a personal trainer course depending on the level of service you want to be qualified to offer. You can take an entry level personal training course that will give you the basics needed to work as a certified personal trainer, or advanced courses that will allow you to do things like teaching outside classes, or even work on diabetes management.

One of the most important traits is discipline. If you’re not disciplined, you cannot expect your clients to be either. This means that you will need to be well organised and always on time for your appointments.

Another very important trait for personal trainers is to be a great listener and communicator. You also need to have a lot of emotional intelligence. You want to be able to know when someone is not giving their 100% vs. someone who might be going through a rough patch. This is very important if you don’t want to end up discouraging or alienating your clients.

If you are contemplating a career as a personal trainer, this is everything you need to know to get started on your path. Make sure that you know what the job truly entails and whether you’re truly cut out for it.
