We know that our lifestyle choices such as alcohol consumption, smoking and a lack of exercise all have an effect on how well we age. But when we talk of beauty bad habits, it’s as much about the expressions we pull and how we sleep that have an impact on how we’re ageing as much as those other factors.
We take a look at the 4 areas of the body, where ageing, is personally more noticeable. Not only do we show you how these lines are forming but how you can correct them.
The deep-set lines between your eyes, or papery lines that line the forehead, can be enough to make you frown further. Often, by frowning through confusion, concentration or annoyance, these lines are becoming more exaggerated over time. Especially as the collagen production slows down as we get older.
It can be a pretty hard habit to break, seeing as we form this expression subconsciously. But being more mindful of it certainly helps.
Additionally, massage is always a great technique to helping to reduce the appearance of lines, particularly the ones in between your eyes. Incorporate our facial routine into your day to help minimise their appearance.
Did you realise that the appearance of crow’s feet often goes hand in hand with frown lines? Do you have a habit of not wearing sunglasses or a hat when outdoors? Or not wearing your prescription when you need it most and have to squint to make out words or objects?
When you squint, you’re also frowning as it uses much of the same muscle groups. Forming two pretty bad beauty habits. If you find you’re squinting a lot, it may be worth booking yourself in for a sight test to see if you may need glasses or a stronger pair. Additionally, always wear sunglasses when it’s bright and sunny out, especially when driving as glare can be really irritating.
Sadly, smiling also contributes to crow’s feet and fine lines, and although we don’t mind these so much, there are ways you can help to minimise them.
Hydration, or a lack of, also contributes in exacerbating lines around the eyes. But be considerate when using creams around the eye area also. Did you know that the skin around the eye area is the most fragile and sensitive than on all of the face? It’s why it’s more prone to sagging, damage, wrinkles and the annoying ability to make us look super sleepy. Always use a cream/serum specifically for the eye area as your day cream is just too heavy. Additionally, always pat the product in with your ring finger to reduce impact.
This duo (or trio more like) from Avon are a powerful combination in tackling fine lines, wrinkles and sagging and will help to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet immediately. Revealing brighter and youthful eyes that just smile back at you.
Lines around the mouth
Who doesn’t love a good selfie! However, you may be aging yourself prematurely with pouting and pursing your lips for a good photo, as it is causing lines not just around the lips, but the entire mouth area. Lines in this area are commonly seen on smokers who purse their lips to inhale on a cigarette so, it is one to nip in the bud immediately.
We love Dermalogica’s Nightly Lip Treatment which helps to smooth out fines lines around the lips and mouth area. The cooling metal tip helps to really massage the product into the skin to allow the hydrating and anti-aging properties to really work their magic. Additionally, with its mentholated extracts, it helps to plump and promote fuller lips.
See if pursing or pouting your lips is ageing you by trying out their ageing tool and see for yourself.
There are a number of factors that contribute to lines appearing on your neck, chest and décolletage.
It can often start as an effect of sleeping on your side where the pressure and heat during the night can leave an impression of lines. It can also be caused by a lack of hydration, where the skin in this area has been neglected when applying your day/night cream. It can also be exacerbated when using a cream that is too heavy for it.
The skin in this area of the body, much like the eye area, is much more fragile and greater care is required. Always incorporate your neck and décolletage into your morning and night time routine as more often than not, it is a lack of hydration that causes the skin to form deep lines. But a little bit of targeted product and massaging this in, in an upwards circular motion will help to reduce the appearance of lines very swiftly.
Much like for your face, a day and night time product is highly recommended. For night, we love Elemis Pro-Collagen Neck & Décolleté Balm. It very quickly reduces, and in my case, removed the appearance of lines on my chest; to reveal a more youthful and pleasing appearance.
For day, Dr.Ceuticals Neck & Chest Lift is a slightly heavier cream that incorporates a sun protection element to help ward of the harmful rays of the sun which can aggravate those lines. You’ll get lasting hydration throughout the day too.
Additionally, a good day/night cream is essential for a more youthful appearance. You will marvel at how quickly a good cream will reduce overall lines on your face, how it brightens your complexion and it’ll also make applying your makeup easier and give you a longer lasting base. Our favourite day/night cream at the moment is Origins GinZing Ultra-Hydrating Energy-Boosting Cream; it’ll give you lasting hydration, smooths and evens out skin tone and really does brighten the skin. The tinted moisturiser is an excellent alternative for the summer too for combining your moisturiser and bit of colour to help even out imperfections and hide blemishes.
Are you falling foul to these beauty bad habits? Was it something you noticed, or have we lifted the lid on something? We’d love to hear from you.
