Crazy for You is maybe one of the lesser known musicals – no less regular theatre goers anyway – and yet the Hippodrome seemed even busier than usual.

Was it star Tom Chambers maybe? Very possible.

In case you don’t know much about the show, it is a revised version of Girl Crazy, the 1930s show by George and Ira Gershwin, featuring their best songs.

Bobby Child is the rich son of a banking family but wants to be a dancer. His mother sends him from New York to Nevada to foreclose a rundown theatre. But when Bobby arrives at the old mining town, he decides to try and save the theatre by putting on a show. This is not just to fulfill his dream of performing, but also to win over the only woman in town, Polly Baker, whose family owns the building.

He disguises himself as Bela Zangler and brings the Follies Girls from New York and rehearsals begin!

The atmosphere on stage during the upbeat musical numbers is great – from the moment the Follies Girls appear, we are transported to the 1930s and it is great to see all the instruments being incorporated in the show. Because, yes, the entire music is live and on stage. Not only do the performers act and dance and sing, they also play all the instruments and this is wonderful to watch.

The highlights were of course Embraceable You by Charlotte Wakefield playing Polly and Tome Chambers, but also They Can’t Take That Away From Me and Nice Work If You Can Get It.

Some of the others however were much less known. Even as someone who has heard a number of Gershwin songs, these would not all have made it into my musical of Gershwin highlights.

The audience however was entertained with the music, the tap dancing, but also a lot of comedy (and physical comedy by Tom Chambers). You will need to see it for yourself to understand just how difficult it can be to climb down a rope onto the stage!

Crazy For You is running at the Bristol Hippodrome until Saturday with evening performances at 7.30pm and matinee performances at 2.30pm on Thursday and Saturday. Get tickets here.
